Seoul – IOM Mission in the Republic of Korea (ROK), in partnership with Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), hosted the Humanitarian Assistance Essentials Training for Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) Reserve Members from 15 to 16 March 2022. The training was attended by 25 KDRT reserve group members including NGO personnel as well as KOICA officials in charge of providing coordination support among ROK humanitarian actors.
Following a training on field security and safety held last year, this training was organized to strengthen the readiness and operational capacity of reserve members of the KDRT, the official overseas emergency response unit of the Republic of Korea (ROK) government. Aimed to help participants acquire a comprehensive understanding of the humanitarian operation and bolster its members’ understanding of related systems at local and global levels, a two-day training offered 8 customized modules combined with lectures and group exercises.
IOM’s experts offered a unique space for participants to tap into fundamentals of huanitarain assistance such as principles, ethical standards, coordination and planning mechanisms in country and at global level, to more specialized thematic areas of humanitarian project cycle management (PCM), Camp Management and Camp Coordination (CCCM), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Gender-based Violence (GBV), Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and age and disability inclusion. Experts from both within and outside of IOM shared not only theoretical knowledge on each topic, but also practical insights to ensure that the learning can be immediately applied into practice.
“As the field of humanitarian assistance is becoming specialized and subdivided into different categories, it is expected that there will be more active knowledge sharing and information exchange on these various topics. And of course, our partnership with KOICA is undoubtedly meaningful and will continue to strengthen this work to develop and provide a forum for progressive discussion on humanitarian assistance related topics,” said Steve Hamilton, Chief of Mission at IOM ROK.
Since 2014, IOM ROK has taken a significant role in providing a wide range of capacity-building support for ROK humanitarian actors with funding support from US Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).
