Seoul –To commemorate International Migrants Day this year, the International Organization for Migration Mission in the Republic of Korea (ROK) launched the #HowRU campaign to share the voices of migrants in the Republic of Korea to raise public awareness about human mobility and promote social cohesion as well as reduce negative perceptions about migrants.

The campaign started with a live-streaming radio show with two migrant panels through social media on 7 December 2022. IOM ROK highlighted the importance of living ‘together’ as members of society by displaying journeys and daily lives of migrants in the Republic of Korea. Muhamad Khalid Bin Ismail (Khalid) from Malaysia and Kim Maria Genevie (Genevie) from the Philippines shared their own migration stories and thoughts on various migration related topics, including migrant integration and social cohesion in South Korean society and the envisioned future of the Republic of Korea in the context of migration. A series of video clips about the experience shared by the panels are posted on IOM ROK’s social media platforms for those who missed the radio show.

Genevie, a mother and an activist, mentioned that “Migration made my dream come true. It was an opportunity for me to know what my strength and my specialty is.” She said, “After I migrated to South Korea, all my dreams became a reality”.

“Consideration is necessary to understand the differences between people. We can live together if we accept that we are different but are all members of society,” said Khalid, who had studied in South Korea and is now a marriage migrant and a CEO of a travel agency in South Korea.”

Materials from this campaign can be found on IOM ROK’s social media accounts - InstagramFacebook and YouTube.
